I love the English language. It is indeed a strange melting pot, but it's been sitting on the stove for so long that the stew has reduced to its essence. A lot can be expressed with very few words. Unlike French for example - beautiful in its own way but grammatically convoluted to the point of comedy. I say this as native speaker who lost a fair bit of it after years in the UK and who recently had to start using it again for work. It's an uphill battle...
